Canadian Family Class Visa
A Canadian citizen or permanent resident may sponsor his or her souse/ common law/ conjugal partner or dependent children to go to Canada as permanent residents.
In order to apply for this visa as a spouse you need to be legally married to your partner. If you were married in a country other than Canada and your marriage is valid in that country, generally, your marriage will be recognised as valid under Canadian law as well.
If you are not married but you are in a relationship with your partner for at least a year, you can also apply for the visa as a common law or conjugal partner. You need to show that you have mutual commitment to a shared life together, evidence of co-habitation. You can apply for this visa if you are of the same or opposite sex and you are over 16. Your sponsor needs be able to provide financial support and must be over 18.
